You have proposed to the woman you want to spend the rest of your life with, she said yes, and the planning for the big event has begun. A wedding is great, but your honeymoon should be amazing!

Just like your wedding, your honeymoon should be all about the two of you. If you are a traditionalist, you may expect the groom to handle the details… and from what I have experienced, this could be a big mistake!

Not that the groom is incapable of planning a trip, but one person planning this trip can be disastrous. This event is probably one of the most important trips of your lifetime, and you don’t want a honeymoon disaster hanging over your marriage for the next 50 years.

Rather than book an Internet special to a surprise destination, I would strongly advise a couple to sit down with an experienced travel professional and work together as a trio so your idyllic trip to paradise will go off without a hitch.

The typical scenario is this: after the proposal, dates are set for the wedding and the madness begins! Somewhere in this chaos, the plans for the honeymoon commence. It is not unusual to see a groom calling with sheer panic in his voice to one month before his wedding having yet to book his honeymoon.

A honeymoon can be as long or short as the two of you would like. The average honeymoon is about a week, but it can range from a couple of days to a month long. Factors to consider before booking your honeymoon include your budget and time off from work.

When deciding on where to go, you should both think of places you have longed to visit and the reasons why. You can begin eliminating destinations due to weather, climate, whether one of you has already been there, or if it’s a place you’d rather visit for an anniversary.

Honeymoons can range from a night in an amazing Las Vegas suite to trekking through the streets of Italy for a couple of weeks or going on a month-long safari in Africa — and it’s all about you! Just like your wedding, your honeymoon should be all about the two of you.

The beautiful thing about a honeymoon is every couple has different ideas of the best place to go. Some prefer traditional ones at classic top honeymoon destinations, while others prefer more unique vacations.

Following are some popular destinations that I would recommend.

Royal Hideaway Playacar — Riviera Maya, Mexico

This Five Diamond award-winning all-inclusive property is a popular choice for many reasons, including its location on breathtaking beaches on Mexico’s pristine Riviera Maya. Not only does it include all meals and beverages, but also entertainment and non-motorized watersports are also included. Additionally, it is a relatively easy flight from Jackson, leaving at around 6:00 a.m. and arriving at noon in Mexico

Ladera Resort — St. Lucia

This property was named the world’s most romantic destination by Honeymoon Magazine. I recommend the Petit Piton Suite with a private plunge pool. Their honeymoon package includes a couple’s massage and dinner for two at their famous Dasheene Restaurant.

Ritz Carlton — Kapalua, Hawaii

This AAA Five Diamond oasis is set on a historic pineapple plantation overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Honeymooners are greeted with a bottle of champagne and a rose or orchid petal turndown service. Their package also includes breakfast for two and a threecourse dinner.

One & Only Palmilla — Los Cabos, Mexico

This is one of the most luxurious resort destinations in Mexico. After arriving to the airport, you will be whisked away by your chauffeur-driven car. And how does a couples massage in an outdoor ocean-view palapa sound? You may want to also go on the Hummer adventure for two and explore the fascinating surroundings in Los Cabos. This resort definitely offers the ultimate romantic refuge.

The Lodge & Spa at Cordillera — Vail, Colo.

Whether you have a summer wedding and you want to escape the heat to the cooler mountains, or you have a winter wedding and the idea of an active ski honeymoon destination is appealing, this place is magnificent. The Lodge & Spa at Cordillera is one of the most luxurious retreats in the world. Perched on a mountaintop overlooking the magnificent Vail Valley, the Lodge was inspired by a chateau in Belgium and offers views like no other. This secluded romantic getaway is ideal for a honeymoon! Their honeymoon package includes a bottle of wine upon arrival, breakfast for two in their famous restaurant, Mirado and a massage for two.

Villa d’Este — Lake Como, Italy

This beautiful villa situated on the shores of Lake Como is unbelievably romantic. Converted into a grand hotel in 1873, this former 16th century residence of European aristocrats is more than just a hotel. Honeymooners will enjoy an upgrade upon arrival, daily buffet breakfast at the Veranda and complimentary use of the mini bar, which is replenished once a day.

Your honeymoon should be beautiful, exciting and romantic. It is a special time together before you go back to the real world or work, responsibilities and married life. Include a lot of quiet, down time when you are alone. Sightseeing and other activities are great, but ultimately this trip is the beginning of the incredible life’s journey you have embarked on together.

Oscar Wilde said “Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us,” and your honeymoon should be all about creating lasting memories.
